Haxfolket 4 by Nattserier Haxfolket 4 by Nattserier
Cover art for Folket Som Försvann by Jo Salmson (published by Bonnier Carlsen in Sweden 2012).
The covers for the other books are:

______Book 1________Book 2________Book 3_____

The book is written by Jo Salmson, who is a popular Swedish author making fantasy books for children.

The cover is all done in Adobe Photoshop CS5 and took about 10 hours with sketching and all, I think. A little old already, I did this one in July 2011.

I really like the design of the purple uniforms. The shading on all clothing in this pic is fascinating. Also very nice mood, rising sun and all.

Thank you! I love to do drapings and folds in the clothes!
The coloring could have been better, especially the lightning, but I'm glad you like the designs. The author (Jo) wanted their clothes to be like the picts', but I incorporated a little asian ninja and sami styles too. So it's Sami Ninja Picts! 8D

impressive work for 10 hours =)
back drop, cliffs, sky, top tier work, very nice ^^d
But if I have to nit pick, I'd say, while deliciously detailed, the adults seem somehow to be flat, as oppose to kids whom are very there. particularly the center guy (villian?) struck me like a cardboard cutout placed there, so the real guy can sneak around and ambush the kids. ^^ something of the lack of folds in his tarbard bugs me, seems a little too flat.
Girls terrorfied expression is spot on, like "oh please god no!"
Boys a little lack luster, but maybe he hasn't caught on to just how deep the shit pile he and his friend has found them in, is ;)

Thanks fot the comments!

Yes, you're right, he and all of them are kinda flat. I guess I went lazy on this one... But also, it couldn't be to dark, because it is a cover and needs to have bright colors to alure the reader.
But I guess the cardboard feeling can be because non of them hade any real casting shadows at all, even though there's bright sunlight in the picture! XD
I should have given it 2 more hours, I guess.

About the expressions, the prob is I didn't get to read the book before I did the cover, and the author didn't tell me how and what or even where they were and nothing about the expressions. So I did a lose sketch and had to trust their judgements, and changed what they thought should be changed. I sked for more information throught the project with all the four books, but didn't get more than in the accual texts, which led to a lot of reworking when they later came to me with "Oh, but the house shouldn't look like that.." or something... >___<'''

well it's nitpicking really and with the way you explain it, I can see the reason behind the problem. Bright colours to snare in costumers =)

Oh, that's gotta be a pisser. =/ worst part is I'm the worst sort of customer myself XD I nitpick to no end. think the record is 6 fixes before it was ready for ink.
But I do try to give my artist as much visual reference material as I can get my grubby little hands on. But also trust in the artists choice of composition.

You have to, it's the fun of a collab. But you also have to give the info that the artist need and asks for, and my author didn't... :S

that does hamper your work =/
I could be a accused of burdening my artist (aside from constant nagging) I not only provide an accurate written desciption, along with a short character(s) profile and piles of reference pictures. I also tend to send along music files, to set the mood XD
some would claim I over do it, I claim I'm throughout ;)
